Waun Athletic XV Vs Llandovery 2nds gameIn an entertaining game the Athletic XV produced a good performance to pull off an excellent win over Llandovery 2nd XV.
Waun started very strongly winning the ball from their own kick-off and applying tremendous attacking pressure on the Llandovery defence. Within 5 minutes the pressure told as a neat chip through the Llandovery defensive line saw Dafydd Pritchard race in to dive on the ball in the goal area ahead of the covering full back to score an unconverted try. Maintaining this pressure Waun managed to win a penalty in the opponents 22 which was converted by the boot of fly half Lee Jones. Waun seemed to relax slighty in the second quarter which encouraged the visiting side and saw them score an unconverted try in the corner near the half time mark.
Half Time Score: Waun Atheltic 8 Llandovery 2nds 5
After the break Waun took control again pressing towards the 22 and were unlucky to have a driving lineout held up over the line. From the resulting scrum Waun set up a ruck on the opposite side of the field which led to the Llandovery defence being caught offside in midfield from the next phase. Fly half Lee Jones again converted the penalty to extend Waun's lead to 4 points. The game became more evenly contested shortly after as Llandovery put their foot on the pedal and moved into their next gear. After enduring some intense pressure at the scrum, Waun No. 8 Chris Jones picked te ball up from the base and went on an impressive 30 yard run up field before being tackled by the covering wing and full back. Waun were able to create quick ball and spread it wide which saw wing Dafydd Pritchard beat his opposing winger on the outside and score an unconverted try in the corner. Shortly after, a kick down field from second phase ball saw the Llandovery full back make an error in trying to clear, which allowed the quick reacting Waun back row to turn the ball over at the ruck and send replacement scrum half Andrew Standbury through a gap in the defnsive line and score in the corner. After Losing veteran prop Phil Murphy to injury in the first half, and prop Stuart Morton in the second, waun had to contest the scrum with two unrecognised props in the form of Malcolm Lerwell and Steffan Jones (senior). To add to this, No. 8 Chris Jones was sin-binned for killing the ball at the ruck area. Llandovery then made some changes to their front row to give them more stability at set piece, and capitalise on their advantage at the scrum. This gave the vistors the upper hand going in to the final quarter. Llandovery managed to score a converted push over try from a 5 metre scrum which drew them back within 9 points. As Llandovery were now on top, with a man advantage and fresh legs at set piece Waun decided to bring on club stalwart and Athletic coach Tony Cleary to bolster the scrum. Llandovery now had their tails up and were hungry for the win, but Waun's committed defence were able to keep them out until the full time whistle.
Full Time Score: Waun Athletic 21 Llandovery 2nds 12

A good performance by all but still room for improvement. Let's all get out training on tuesdays and thursdays at 6.15pm and get a bit more organised.
P.S. if anyone knows of any props that are interested in playing bring them along as my neck was bloody killing Sunday morning!!!
